Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts. Your TLN Family Dental provider inserts the implants into your jaw during an outpatient operation.

After placement, the implants integrate with your bone, providing a foundation for crowns, bridges, or implant-retained overdentures.

Unlike dentures, dental implants don’t need adhesives to stay in place. They present few risks and often last a lifetime*.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants provide various benefits, including:

  • Improved oral health
  • Durability
  • Clearer speech
  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Confidence

Dental implants are also convenient. You don’t need to take them out or soak them like dentures. Simply brush them twice daily and floss at least once a day to keep them in optimal condition.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At TLN Family Dental, getting dental implants takes three separate visits.

First dental implants visit

Your provider reviews your dental records, conducts an oral exam, and takes a series of digital X-rays. If you’re missing one or more permanent teeth and you have enough bone to support dental implants, you qualify for treatment.

Your provider numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and places a series of dental implants in your jaw. How many implants you receive depends on several factors, including how many teeth are missing and the type of restoration you want.

After surgery, your provider explains how to care for the implants and prevent infection.

Second dental implants visit

Several months later, after the implants finish integrating with your jaw, you return to TLN Family Dental.

Your provider takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a nearby dental lab. Techs at the lab use your impressions to design and create a custom restoration made from zirconia, a tough and durable material.

Third dental implants visit

When the lab finishes your zirconia restorations, you visit TLN Family Dental for the last time. Your provider connects the custom restoration to your implants, polishes it, and provides care instructions.

Are dental implants safe?

Dental implants are safe and typically well-tolerated. After surgery, it’s normal to experience mild swelling, bleeding, and increased sensitivity. Take your medication as prescribed, get plenty of rest, and follow your provider’s recovery instructions.
