Dentures Q&A

What are dentures?

Dentures are removable prosthetics that replace some or all of your permanent teeth and the surrounding tissues. They’re made from materials like plastic, nylon, acrylic, or metal, and they reduce the risk of oral health problems caused by missing teeth.

Dentures aren’t as tough as your natural teeth, but if you visit TLN Family Dental regularly and practice good oral hygiene, they often last between five and seven years* and sometimes even longer.

What are the types of dentures?

TLN Family Dental offers several types of dentures, including:

Partial dentures

If you’re missing only a few permanent teeth, your TLN Family Dental provider might recommend a partial denture. A partial has a wireframe and several artificial teeth. The wireframe attaches to small metal clasps bonded to your remaining permanent teeth.

Complete dentures

If you’re missing all of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw, TLN Family Dental might recommend complete dentures. Complete dentures have a metal base, pink artificial gums, and an entire row of false teeth. To keep the denture from moving out of place, you apply an adhesive to the bottom.

Implant-retained dentures

If you don’t want to remove your dentures regularly or you want a more permanent tooth-replacement option, TLN Family Dental might recommend implant-retained dentures. Implant retained dentures are complete dentures that attach to dental implants –– titanium posts that your dentist surgically inserts into your jaw.

What is the process for getting dentures?

At TLN Family Dental, getting dentures takes at least two visits.

First dentures visit

Your provider reviews your dental records, performs an oral exam, and takes digital X-rays. If you’re missing two or more permanent teeth, you qualify for dentures.

Your provider takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a nearby dental lab. Techs at the lab use your impressions to design and manufacture a custom set of dentures that fit perfectly.

Second dentures visit

When the lab finishes your dentures, you return to TLN Family Dental.

Your provider has you try the dentures on to assess their fit. Then, they make adjustments, ensuring a perfect fit. Before leaving, your provider explains how to clean your dentures and keep them in optimal condition.

How do I take care of my dentures?

Your mouth is filled with bacteria, so it’s crucial to keep your dentures clean. TLN Family Dental recommends removing your dentures after meals and snacks and rinsing them in cool tap water. It’s also important to brush your dentures twice daily and soak them in a dentist-approved cleaning solution when you go to sleep.
